WHAT IS THE AVERAGE PAY/WAGE AS A DENTAL ASSISTANT?
The average hourly wage for a dental assistant in the U.S. is $19.12 according to the United States Department of Labor. Dental assistants in specialty offices may vary in wage.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DUTIES OF A DENTAL ASSISTANT?
The duties and responsibilities of a dental assistant vary from state to state. In every dental office or clinic, the dental assistant can be involved in direct patient care, administrative and laboratory duties. As the heart of the practice the dental assistant is a key team member who is respected and valued. The following duties are common to every dental assistant:
– Assisting a dentist with treatments and procedures
– Providing dental hygiene instruction
– Sterilizing dental instruments and equipment
– Scheduling patients
– Presenting treatment plans and treatment fees
– Ordering and stocking dental supplies
– With Nebraska approved education: exposing radiographs and coronal polish
WILL I NEED ADDITIONAL TRAINING AFTER THIS PROGRAM?
Yes, it is recommended to take a Radiography Certification Course as most dental employers require you to be radiography certified in order to take x-rays on patients. By completing the 200 hours of the externship requirement, you will be eligible to take the radiography certification course.
DO I HAVE TO FIND A DENTAL OFFICE ON MY OWN FOR MY EXTERNSHIP?
Our program does not guarantee your placement in a dental office for your externship. However, we will make every effort to help you find a general and specialty dental office for your externship. In our experience, it is not difficult to do so. We recommend that you start with your own dentist with whom you have establish a relationship.
DOES SDAA ASSIST WITH JOB PLACEMENT?
While SDAA does not guarantee job placement, we have several dental offices that we work with. From our experience, most dental assisting students are hired quickly after completion of the course.
IS SPRINGHILL DENTAL ASSISTING ACADEMY AUTHORIZED BY THE STATE?
SpringHill Dental Assisting Academy is authorized to operate and regulated by the Nebraska Department of Education Private Post Secondary Career Schools. SHDAA is authorized to award a Certificate in Dental Assisting upon completion of our 17week lecture/lab training and 94 hours of off-site clinical assisting externship. Our rigorous program is designed to help you become immediately employable as a dental assistant.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NATIONALLY CERTIFIED DENTAL ASSISTANT (CDA) AND A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION FROM SDAA?
The state of Nebraska does not require an individual to be a nationally Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) to be employed as a dental assistant. To become a CDA, an individual needs to meet the following requirements established by the Dental Assisting National Board:
1. High school graduation or equivalent
2. Minimum of 3,500 hours of approved work experience
3. Current CPR from a DANB-accepted provider
WHERE DO I TAKE THE RADIOGRAPHY COURSE?
Upon completion of the 200 hour externship the dental assistant is eligible to attend the radiology class for dental assistants. The radiology course if offered at the following institution. The radiology course fee is not included in the SDAA tuition.
1. Creighton University School of Dentistry
2. University of Nebraska – Lincoln
WHERE DO I TAKE THE CORONAL POLISHING COURSE?
The Coronal Polish Certificate class can be taken after 1500 hours working as a dental assistant. UNMC in Lincoln or Creighton Dental School in Omaha offers this certificate course. This is not included in the SDAA tuition and is not included the course curriculum.
